Utilising LinkedIn for Job Searching


It is fair to say that the world of recruitment and how candidates look for jobs is ever changing.  Gone are the days when a Recruiter posts an advertisement and receives volume quality response for a given position.  Yes of course we still do advertise roles but if we were to rely on applications alone we would not fill many of our open positions.
This landscape is every changing and as a Recruiter and a Candidate it is vital that we keep abreast and change with the times.  As a candidate you should load your CV onto various jobsites. Dependent on what area you work in, there are specialist sites which may be more beneficial for you to choose.  Some of the better known ones are Reed, CV Library, Totaljobs, Fish4jobs, Jobsite, Monster, Indeed, and so on.  However, with the explosion of Social Media: Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn all play their part.


Unemployment is at an all-time low, in fact the lowest since records began in 1971.  What does this mean for the Recruitment Industry?  It means we need to be incredibly proactive in sourcing candidates for our Clients’ requirements.


LinkedIn is another valuable tool for both us as a Recruiter, and for you as a candidate to secure a new role.  Founded in 2003 their growth has been phenomenal with statistics today of over 500 million users in 200 countries.  In the simplest form it was launched as a professional networking site to network with business professionals.  Its uses continue to evolve as they develop additional products and services. For the recruitment world it is a great source for business development as well as attracting candidates.


If you haven’t already done so, set up your own LinkedIn profile today. There is also a new feature where you can include that you are ‘Open to new opportunities’. Adding a professional photo of yourself to your profile will result in 21 times more profile views according to LinkedIn’s latest statistics.  Include a short bio of your work history and your skills and experience and you are away! You can look to connect to people and grow your own personal network, apply for jobs posted on LinkedIn, follow companies you are interested in and engage with recruiters.  Recruiters will be able to privately email you about suitable opportunities.
