- Thank you so much for all your help and advice - it means a lot to me! I'm so glad I've finally got a full time job!!!!!!!!!
Going from Graduate to Employee
Going straight from University into a new job can be an intimidating experience, as I have recently discovered! There’s no more going out on a Wednesday night, waking up to chat to your closest friends, or deciding to “catch up on work later” if it’s raining in the morning. But there are many rewarding aspects to full time work, such as building great new friendships, feeling accomplished when you master a new skill and, in our case, helping people to find employment of their own!
My first two weeks here at Brite have been both a steep learning curve and a joy, with everyone in the office making me feel extremely welcome. With this in mind, I’ve been thinking about the tips I would give to other graduates in a similar position:
1.Get to know your team, before you even start! – This isn’t as creepy as it sounds. Looking at the LinkedIn profiles of your future colleagues can really help to put your mind at ease, as well as giving you a better idea of what you might be doing in your new role.
2.Be prepared – My first week happened to be during a heatwave, so the professional outfits I had in mind were soon thrown out the window when I found out that the dress code was relaxed for the heat. However, knowing what to wear, how much time you need to leave to get there, and what you need to bring with you are essential for your first day. Not only will they help you to make a good first impression, they will save you from rushing around and panicking in the morning of your first day.
3.Have confidence (or at least fake it!). Although you don’t have all the skills of your colleagues just yet, you have completed a degree so must have the perseverance to get there. Try not to dwell on the things you struggle with to start with. Instead, accept help and celebrate the small successes along the way.
If like me, you’ve graduated, but instead are yet to start your career, take a look at the range of roles we have posted online and see if any of them are right for you! Alternatively, give us a call in the office today on 01242 228 200.
