Tour of Britain
Tomorrow, here in Cheltenham, we have the delight of hosting the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain. The 185km ride from Hemel Hempstead sees some of the world’s top cyclists finish in the county for the first time in the event. Last year, as part of the Tour, cyclists were ‘briefly’ seen peddling to the metal through the centre of Gloucester on their journey.
As I’m sure you know, Cheltenham ‘does’ Festival quite well (it’s what we are famous for!) ‘Cheltenham Festival of Cycling’ is well and truly underway with plenty of green bikes dotted throughout the town and in shop windows – everyone is getting in the spirit. As well as this, on the day there will be two big screens for people to watch the event, street markets and a demo zone.
There will be lots of chances for you to catch glimpses of the cyclists as they travel through Winchcombe, climbing Cleeve Hill, Southam Lane, Evesham Road through Pittville Park before going past Clarks, HSBC and Cavendish House to race for the finish line at Imperial Gardens.
Cheltenham is hoping the festival will ignite a passion for cycling in people – from complete novices, to ad-hoc users and pros - and will inspire people to just generally be more active.
